Aspirants in the Tamale Central Constituency Parliamentary Primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have pledged to uphold peace before, during, and after the exercise.
The aspirants – Mariama Naama Salifu, Sadat Haruna Alhassan, Hajia Mulaika Salisu, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, and Hanan Gundadow Abdul-Rahaman (represented by a delegate) – made the commitment at a meeting in Tamale facilitated by the Northern Regional Peace Council.
The meeting followed tensions arising from pronouncements by some aspirants’ camps considered unhealthy for promoting peace.
Mr. Alhassan described the primaries as a family affair, urging unity for the party’s overall victory. Ms. Salifu stressed that adherence to the party’s election guidelines would ensure peaceful polls, while Mr. Gundadow, through his representative, called for fairness to guarantee peace.
Alhaji Mohammed Awal Alhassan, a member of the Northern Regional Peace Council, said the engagement formed part of measures to ensure calm before, during, and after the polls. Mr. Nuhu Abukari, Acting Regional Executive Secretary of the Council, assured continuous engagement with stakeholders to maintain peace.
The primaries are scheduled for Saturday, September 6, with 12 aspirants cleared to contest to replace the late MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who died with seven others in a helicopter crash on August 6.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Peace Council has appealed to stakeholders, political parties, and residents of Tamale Central to embrace peace throughout the electoral process.
