NDC supporters storm Manhyia District Police Command during protest against EC

Tensions were high as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) protested against the Electoral Commission in Kumasi on Sunday morning.

The protesters burned car tires and chanted ‘No Mahama, No Peace’ as the opposition party continued to claim John Mahama was the rightful winner of the 2020 election.

The protest which was led by Ashanti Regional Executives of the NDC was peaceful until some of the protesters stormed the Manhyia District Police Command after they claimed some of their colleagues were arrested.

The angry protesters pelted stones and injuring some police officers on duty and also caused damage to a vehicle belonging to one of the officers.

Police later called for reinforcement and succeeded in dispersing the crowd.

The protesters moved to the Kumasi Jubillee Park where they burnt car tire- a situation which nearly resulted in a scuffle between them and a combined team of armed police and military officers.

A water cannon van from the police was used to douse the fire set up by the supporters.

Police and military personnel later succeeded in dispersing the protesters on a rampage and also cleared the streets.

One person has also been injured and has been rushed to the Manhyia District hospital.

The Ashanti Regional Organizer of the NDC, Isham Alhassan who spoke to Citi News said two of their members have been picked up by police.

But the Manhyia Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Charles Appiah said the protesters stormed the Manhyia police command based on false information of the arrest of their colleagues.

“It was completely false. They were coming to demand that person’s release. We explained to them that nobody was arrested. The demonstrators would not agree and they started throwing stones.”

“They threw stones and some of the police were hurt and a vehicle was damaged.”
