NDC gives EC one-week ultimatum to address forensic audit demands

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Electoral Commission (EC) to act on their demand for a forensic audit of the voters’ register and Information Technology system.

Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer, remarked that the NDC will resort to constitutional means to compel the EC to meet their demands.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, Ghanaians do not need intransigence from the EC, as that will not guarantee a transparent, free, and fair election.

He said “We have decided to wait for just a week to see how they would respond. It is our expectation that they would do the needful because clearly, the intransigent they are displaying is not in the interest of Ghanaians”.

The communications officer added that the NDC will continually mount pressure through a relentless series of mammoth protests to achieve their aim.

Speaking on Joynews, Mr. Gyamfi expressed the opinion that “what you saw today is just the tip of the iceberg… we are not going to pick guns, fight anybody. We are a law-abiding political party so we will do what the constitution of Ghana allows us to do thus to protest.”

The EC, however, has acknowledged that there were irregularities with the register, including the illegal transfer of votes in some constituencies such as Pusiga, and Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam.

However, contrary to the EC’s stance that it will not kowtow to a forensic audit of the register and its IT system, it has assured the NDC that it will respond to their petition in the coming days following the party’s nationwide protest on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
