The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the forfeiture of membership of Mr. Umar Sanda after he declared his intention to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.

In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC stated that Mr. Sanda’s decision contravenes the party’s constitution and its collective resolution to field a duly elected candidate for the March 3, 2026 poll.

According to the party, by choosing to contest against its officially endorsed candidate, Mr. Sanda has automatically relinquished his membership with immediate effect in line with internal regulations.

“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have… automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter stated.

The party further directed that Mr. Sanda is prohibited from using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any intellectual property associated with the party in his campaign or any related political activity.

The decision underscores the NDC’s position on party discipline, particularly regarding members who defy internal processes by running as independent candidates in elections where the party has already selected representatives.

The Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026, is expected to be keenly contested, with political parties seeking to consolidate support in the constituency.

Mr. Sanda has yet to publicly respond to the party’s decision.
