The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared its readiness for the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North. This follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold fresh elections in 19 polling stations after disputes over the 2024 results.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn.
“Our candidate is capable and competent,” Gbande said. “On December 7, voters leaned toward choosing her over a rival more known for dancing on platforms and being linked to visa racketeering.”
He accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of trying to manipulate the process and force a candidate on the constituency.
“You can’t impose a leader on a people,” Gbande insisted. “Since December, the NPP has shown through its actions and walkouts in Parliament that it wants to bypass the will of the electorate.”
The EC said it decided on a rerun because scanned Pink Sheets from 19 polling stations weren’t verified by Presiding Officers, even though party agents approved them. The original Pink Sheets had been destroyed when chaos erupted at the collation center.
Gbande compared the situation to a cancelled exam. “If you’re a capable student and your paper gets cancelled, you shouldn’t fear rewriting it,” he said. “We’re ready to go back to the voters and win their mandate again.”
He also alleged that the NPP had previously tried to use the EC to take the Ablekuma North seat from the NDC.
“Ablekuma North is one of the seats the NPP tried to snatch using the Commission. But we’ll do what the law demands,” Gbande added.
The EC has scheduled the rerun for Friday, July 11, 2025. It has assured Ghanaians of a transparent and secure process, with police deployed to maintain peace.
