The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially cleared Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed to contest the upcoming by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency, following the conclusion of internal party investigations into allegations that previously clouded his candidacy.

The decision by the National Democratic Congress comes after a thorough review process conducted by the party’s disciplinary and vetting structures, which sought to establish the veracity of claims of vote-buying and electoral malpractice levelled against the former Deputy Minister.

Mr. Baba Jamal had earlier been accused by some party members of engaging in vote inducement during the NDC parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East. The allegations generated internal tensions within the party and sparked calls from some quarters for his disqualification from future internal or public electoral contests.

In response, Baba Jamal strongly denied the accusations, insisting that his political career has been built on integrity, loyalty to the party, and service to constituents. He subsequently appeared before a special committee set up by the NDC leadership to investigate the claims.

After days of investigations, engagements with stakeholders, and review of available evidence, the NDC has reportedly concluded that there was insufficient proof to substantiate the allegations against Baba Jamal. The party has therefore declared him eligible to represent the NDC in the anticipated Ayawaso East by-election.

Party insiders indicate that the decision was guided by the NDC’s commitment to fairness, internal democracy, and the protection of members’ political rights unless clear wrongdoing is established.

The clearance of Baba Jamal is seen by many political observers as a strategic move by the NDC to consolidate its strength in Ayawaso East, a constituency regarded as highly competitive in Ghana’s electoral landscape.

Sources within the party suggest that leadership has urged all factions and grassroots supporters to close ranks and rally behind the approved candidate to enhance the NDC’s chances of securing victory in the by-election.

Following his clearance, Baba Jamal has reportedly expressed gratitude to the NDC leadership and membership for what he described as a fair and transparent process. He reaffirmed his commitment to unity within the party and pledged to run an issue-based campaign focused on development, youth empowerment, and improved social services within the constituency.

He also reiterated his loyalty to the ideals and vision of the NDC, promising to work tirelessly to justify the confidence reposed in him by the party.

The Ayawaso East Constituency remains a politically strategic area within the Greater Accra Region, with a youthful voter population and diverse socio-economic dynamics. The upcoming by-election is expected to attract national political attention, with major parties mobilising significant resources and campaign machinery.

The by-election, once officially declared by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, will serve as an important political test for both the NDC and its main competitors as they seek to expand their parliamentary representation.

Political analysts believe the NDC’s decision to clear Baba Jamal signals the party’s intention to present a strong and experienced candidate capable of mobilising grassroots support and strengthening its electoral fortunes in the constituency.

With the stage now set, attention is expected to shift to campaign strategies, voter engagement, and inter-party contest as the Ayawaso East by-election approaches.
