Godwin Ako Gunn, Deputy National Comminications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the party to deliberately recognise and engage its former executives, warning that neglecting those who once served breeds bitterness and weakens party unity.

In a reflective commentary titled “Being a Former Executive Is Like Death, Everyone Will Taste It,” the Deputy National communications director of the ruling National Democratic Congress noted that while winning elections or securing appointments often comes with celebration and prestige, such moments are temporary and inevitably come to an end.

According to him, his experience as a party executive has brought him into contact with many former executives who feel abandoned after leaving office, a situation he described as “very sad” but increasingly common in political organisation.

“Being appointed or winning an election comes with joy and a feeling of being on top of the world, but it is only for a period,” he observed, stressing that exit from office could come through elections, reshuffles, resignation, old age, or fatigue.

He urged current party leaders to reflect on how they would want to be treated when their own time in office ends, noting that “this moment will surely come.”

The fire brand communicator challenged the NDC to reverse the trend of neglect by showing appreciation to those who laboured before them, suggesting simple but meaningful gestures such as invitations to party events, reserved seating, public acknowledgement, and regular engagement.

He further proposed that former executives and former appointees should be actively involved during by-elections and when addressing critical constituency issues, making such engagements periodic to foster a sense of belonging within the party.

Using a symbolic analogy, he likened the party’s journey to that of a tortoise, explaining that its perceived slowness is actually a sign of care and gratitude for the little things that sustain it.

“If indeed we want to be in power for a long time, let’s build bridges, create space, be kind to each other, and reduce pain in the hearts of those who contributed to where we are today,” he stressed.

He emphasised that recognition should not be limited to elected or appointed officers but extended to grassroots members who have supported the party over the years, both financially and in kind.

The statement concluded with a message of optimism, expressing confidence in the NDC’s future if it remains united and inclusive.

“I see the NDC breaking records, breaking limits, and setting new standards. We can only achieve this when we close our ranks and bring everyone on board,” he said.
