The South Tongu District Assembly has handed over industrial equipment to beneficiaries of the newly restructured National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) as part of efforts to promote youth employment and entrepreneurship.

The event took place at the Dabala Lorry Park on Saturday, February 7, 2026, and formed part of the government’s Skills for Jobs agenda aimed at equipping young people with vocational skills and tools to establish their own businesses.

Addressing participants at the ceremony, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for South Tongu, Victoria Dzeklo, said the initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to transforming skills training into sustainable economic opportunities for the youth.

According to her, the equipment distribution will enable beneficiaries to transition from training into active employment and business ownership.

She noted that the programme is non-partisan and open to all eligible youth who are willing to acquire employable skills, stressing that government interventions are intended to benefit the broader community.

The ceremony was attended by a representative of the Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mensah Kwaku Kudze, the District Coordinating Director, Richard Adusu Dorvlo, as well as assembly staff and youth stakeholders.

In total, 40 beneficiaries and eight trainers received various working tools, including hand and electric sewing machines, hairdryers, and knitting machines to support their vocational activities.

The National Apprenticeship Programme is designed to strengthen technical and vocational training across the country and create employment opportunities for young people.

Mr. Johnson Samlafo, the Volta Regional Director of the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), commended the government for what he described as a visionary and people-centred Skills for Jobs agenda. He stated that the initiative demonstrates the current administration’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment and expanding opportunities for young people across the country.

He further added that the Volta Region suffered neglect in terms of youth development interventions during the previous administration led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, adding that the current government is working deliberately to bridge the development gap and restore opportunities for the youth in the region.

Officials say the initiative is expected to enhance local economic activity while supporting government’s broader youth empowerment and job creation drive.
