The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has confirmed that a member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force was shot and injured during an anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
In a statement issued by NAIMOS, the incident occurred in a bush along the Subinkurum–Kyeremasu stretch within the Dormaa Central Municipality while the task force was conducting a routine operation against illegal mining activities.
According to the statement, armed assailants who were hiding in the bush opened fire upon sighting the task force, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the incident, one NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot injury to the thigh and was immediately rushed to the St. Matthew Catholic Hospital, where he is reported to be responding positively to treatment.
The statement further disclosed that one of the armed assailants involved in the attack was shot during the exchange and later pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital. The deceased was identified as Abuu Ibrahim.
NAIMOS reassured the public that despite persistent attacks and disruptions, the Secretariat remains resolute in its mandate to combat illegal mining across the country. It also called on all stakeholders to continue supporting efforts aimed at eradicating galamsey and protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
The statement was signed by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer of NAIMOS.
