The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Ashanti Region to take bold and collective action to enhance security within their jurisdictions.
Speaking at the New Year Retreat of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council held in Nkawie, Hon. Muntaka emphasized the critical responsibility of MMDCEs in ensuring peace, safety, and stability, particularly at a time when incidents of violent crime, including firearm-related offences, are on the rise.
The retreat was held under the theme “Retreat, Re-organize, and Redirect Towards the Reset Agenda.”
Hon. Muntaka urged MMDCEs to take the lead in advancing key security interventions, with particular focus on the Gun Amnesty Programme. He disclosed that the programme, which was launched on December 1, 2025, has been extended to January 30, 2026, following appeals from stakeholders.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at reducing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, strengthening conflict management mechanisms, and enhancing fire and rescue services across the country.
The Interior Minister revealed that the programme has already recorded encouraging results, with civil society organizations and traditional authorities throwing their support behind the initiative through mop-up exercises and public sensitization.
He called on MMDCEs to actively champion the Gun Amnesty Programme in their respective districts by organizing town hall meetings, working closely with chiefs and opinion leaders, and encouraging the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms.
Hon. Muntaka further urged the MMDCEs to provide regular progress reports to the Ministry of the Interior and intensify local-level security coordination efforts.
He assured the public of the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to implementing effective security policies and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to work closely with all stakeholders to promote peace, stability, and safety nationwide.
“Together, we must act decisively to build a safer and more secure Ghana,” he stated.
