Miracles Aboagye accuses NDC of undermining Judiciary over GBA criticism

Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as a recurring pattern of hostility toward Ghana’s judicial institutions.

Aboagye’s comments follow strong backlash from the NDC directed at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), after the GBA condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and called for its reversal. The NDC accused the GBA of bias and questioned its independence.

In response, Aboagye claimed the NDC has historically shown disregard for the judiciary whenever outcomes do not favor them. He argued that the GBA has the right to share its legal opinion and warned that political attacks on such institutions threaten Ghana’s democratic foundation.

He further called on the NDC to respect the professional bodies that help safeguard the rule of law, urging them to challenge decisions through legal means rather than personal attacks or political statements.

The suspension of the Chief Justice has become a flashpoint in Ghanaian politics, with various actors weighing in on the legality and broader implications of the decision. While the government maintains the move is constitutional, critics continue to raise concerns over judicial independence.
