The Minority in Parliament is pushing back against claims that the Mahama administration deserves credit for the recent Eban and Akoma oil and gas discoveries.
At a press briefing in Parliament, Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee, Collins Adomako Mensah, defended the track record of the previous Akufo-Addo government in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector. He argued that the recent discoveries are a direct result of policies and agreements implemented under the former administration.
“ENI, in line with the CTP Block 4 Petroleum Agreement, submitted two separate discovery notices to the then Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Commission, and GNPC,” he said. “These were publicized by local media at the time.”
He described as misleading and politically motivated any attempt to attribute the discoveries to the Mahama-led government.
“The Mahama administration had no involvement in the drilling of the Akoma and Eban wells or the approval of their appraisal programme,” he noted. “It’s disingenuous for the current government to attempt to rewrite history and claim credit for work done under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.”
The Minority contends that the government is on a deliberate campaign to appropriate credit for discoveries that were already underway before the current administration took office.
