The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs has handed over sanitation equipment to the Metropolitan and Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Accra.
The ministry handed over 1,600 pairs of gloves, 1,000 long brooms, and other essential gear to the 29 MMDAs, as the gesture will serve as a clear call to action for improved public health.
Also, the tools are specifically intended to enhance the effectiveness of the National Sanitation Day exercises and empower Environmental Health Officers to enforce cleanliness standards across the region.
With the right equipment now distributed, the focus shifts to consistent field action and the maintenance of a cleaner environment for all residents.
The Deputy Sector Minister, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, reminded local leaders that the impact of these tools depends on responsible management.
She urged MMDCEs and coordinating directors to ensure that every item is used effectively and for its intended purpose.
“Beyond the government’s investment, she called for a shared sense of duty among traditional leaders and the public, noting that a truly clean Ghana can only be achieved when every citizen takes responsibility for their surroundings,” she added.
Receiving the items, the dean of the MMDCEs, John Desmond Sowah Nai, called on the government to increase the sanitation allocation as they remain committed to ensuring a clean city.
The ministry said other regions will benefit in due course, and sweepers are going to be deployed into the principal streets of Accra to ensure that they clean everywhere during the day and midnight, 24-hour sanitation.
