Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has revealed plans to push for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) among government ministers based in Accra. He said a formal proposal will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
The initiative is a key step in Ghana’s broader plan to cut emissions and promote clean energy under its national energy transition framework.
Government Leading by Example
Mr. Jinapor announced the launch of a 60-kilowatt solar-powered EV charging station in Accra. The station was commissioned by the Energy Commission as part of its Drive Electric Initiative (DEI).
He stressed that adopting EVs makes both environmental and financial sense.
EVs have lower operating costs than fossil-fuel vehicles. This means long-term savings for operators, cheaper fares for commuters, and less reliance on imported fuel,” he noted.
Infrastructure and Regulation in Focus
The Energy Commission has been spearheading several projects to accelerate e-mobility in Ghana. These include:
- Hosting the country’s first electric mobility conference
- Launching public EV charging forums
- Conducting technical studies to guide infrastructure rollout
- Drafting regulations for EV charging and battery swap systems
These regulations aim to align Ghana’s infrastructure with international standards, ensuring safety and efficiency.
Commission Eyes National Expansion
At the launch event, Acting Executive Secretary Eunice Biritwum said the Commission plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Transport to scale up EV usage nationwide. “This charging station is a milestone. It drives the green mobility agenda, showcases innovation, and encourages collective action,” she said.
She urged transport unions, investors, and public-private stakeholders to join in advancing Ghana’s clean transport goals.
Looking Ahead
As Ghana commits to decarbonizing its transport sector, officials say switching to EVs is a practical step toward sustainability. The new charging station and related policies are expected to pave the way for broader adoption across the country.
