A Ghanaian private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker Vormawor has paid what could be described as unusual tribute to the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari praying for the blood of #EndSars protestors who were killed on his command haunt him in the death.
In a Facebook post following the news of the death of the former President, the Convener for #FixTheCountry Movement wrote;
Buhari is dead…Good Riddance.
May the blood of EndSars protestors who were killed on his command haunt him in the beyond
#EndSARS was a decentralised social movement and series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria that mainly occurred in 2020.
The movement’s slogan called for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious unit of the Nigerian Police known for its long record of abuse against Nigerian citizens.
The protests originated from a Twitter now X campaign in 2017, using the hashtag #EndSARS to demand the unit’s disbandment by the Nigerian government.
The movement experienced a resurgence in October 2020 following further revelations of the unit’s abuses, leading to mass demonstrations across major cities in Nigeria, and widespread outrage on social media platforms.
Amnesty International reported that:
During the powerful #EndSARS protest, at least 56 people were killed by excessive use of force used by the army and police.
On 20 October, 2024 between 6:45 pm and 9:00 pm, under the watch of the then President Buhari, the Nigerian army and police reportedly killed at least 12 peaceful protesters and left several injured in Lekki and Alausa in the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. The security forces, without warning, opened fire on thousands of people who were peacefully calling for good governance and an end to police violence as part of the #EndSARS movement.
On that day alone, 38 people allegedly died across Nigeria.”
Former President Buhari died today aged 82.
