Massive power outage hits Ghana; GRIDCo and ECG say is system failure

The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have issued a joint apology for a system disturbance that has resulted in a power outage affecting various parts of the country.

According to a press release dated May 1, 2025, the incident occurred at 1:42 pm when a tipper truck discharging stones at a construction site near the Nkawkaw-Konongo Transmission Line accidentally lifted its bucket into the line conductor, causing significant damage and disrupting the power supply.

This unfortunate event led to a cascade effect, causing all power plants at Aboadze and Anwomaso to trip, subsequently cutting off power to the Western, Central, and Northern regions, as well as some areas in Accra. The GRIDCo and ECG teams have swiftly mobilized to the affected location to undertake repairs on the damaged transmission line, with work currently underway to restore power to all impacted areas by 6 pm yesterday.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this incident has caused,” the statement read, expressing regret for the disruption to daily life and economic activities.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has acknowledged the challenges confronting the nation’s power sector, particularly the frequent power outages that have been frustrating citizens nationwide.

In a candid interview with Happy FM, Minister Jinapor emphasized that the current administration inherited significant energy problems from its predecessor, stressing that despite the issues within agencies like ECG, GRIDCo, or the Energy Commission, it is their responsibility to resolve the challenges.

“What people know is that there is a Minister appointed by the President to supervise the sector. Legitimately, the people of Ghana will always hold the Minister responsible. And by that, I take full responsibility,” he assured, demonstrating his commitment to addressing the nation’s power woes.
