Massive crowd welcomes John Mahama to Kumasi

People poured in their numbers onto the streets of Kumasi to welcome former President John Dramani Mahama. The former President and his team were overwhelmed by the crowd that thronged the airport to welcome him. People flooded the streets surrounding the Kumasi airport before the former President’s arrival, defying all security arrangements at the airport.

[ads1]Others who suspected that the former President may travel by road, lined up in their numbers by the streets to welcome the former President. A drive to Manhyia which normally takes 10 minutes, lasted more than an hour as people thronged the streets seeking a glimpse of the former President.

The former President was in Kumasi to join Otumfuo and the people of the Ashanti Region celebrate the one year anniversary of the demise of the late Asantihemaa. Some media houses were at the place to cover the scene. They interviewed people who were at the place to welcome the president. A Kumasi radio station said the crowd was the largest ever gathering to welcome a leader in Kumasi in recent times. The boisterous crowd virtually drowned the former President’s speech when he attempted to calm the situation. He told the crowd to calm down and focus on the anniversary of his mother the late Asantehemaa.

“The late Queen mother was more than a mother to me. She treated me like a biological child and guided my steps with her motherly counseling. Let’s bury all the politics and join our King and the people of Asante celebrate her one year anniversary” he told the crowd.

Handling the crowd at Manhyia when the former President arrived to greet Otumfuo and his elders was another herculean task for the security operatives. The crowd swelled every second all seeking a glimpse of the former President. After greeting Otumfuo, the former President attempted to greet the elders at the place but again his movements were slowed by a huge crowd.

Journalists from some of the media houses who were at the place to cover the event found out from the crowd why that massive reception.

One Kwame Kaakyire a spare parts dealer said “Our economy was performing above average before my party the NPP took over but it is in shambles now. People can hardly feed, the cedi is dead. Ghanaians including myself and many others in the spare parts business are regretting voting Akufo-Addo, that is the truth”.

Nana Afrifa a retired worker of Cocobod said “As a president [Akufo-Addo] he is looking at a maze but you cannot read or lead the economy inside that maze without anybody interpreting it to you, it’s a matrix. Akufo Addo has to recognize the fact that his administration is failing and disappointing we the supporters. He has to push out those who obviously have no business in the government, corrupt family members and friends, inefficient people are everywhere in his government”
