Mahama’s decision to appoint female security heads is a bold step – FOSDA

The recent appointments of women to top security positions in Ghana have garnered praise from the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA), which views the move as a significant step toward promoting gender equality in the nation’s security sector. FOSDA has expressed strong support for President John Dramani Mahama’s initiative to elevate women into key leadership roles within security institutions.

The foundation specifically acknowledged the appointment of DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service and DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong as the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service.

FOSDA sees these appointments as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to inclusive governance and progress in gender equality within critical security institutions.

“These appointments reflect the government’s dedication to creating opportunities for women in security leadership and contribute significantly to the UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security,” FOSDA stated.

The foundation congratulated the newly appointed leaders, highlighting their expertise and accomplishments. Baffoe-Bonnie’s role in prison health reforms and advocacy for human rights, alongside Ntow-Sapong’s leadership in fire safety and operational efficiency, were commended.

FOSDA also urged the government to continue its efforts in promoting gender parity by adopting gender-responsive budgeting and ensuring robust accountability within security services.

“We encourage the President Mahama-led government to continue this progress and appoint more women into leadership positions in the Security Services,” said Theodora W. Anti, Executive Director of FOSDA.
