President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, June 30, welcomed Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson back to Ghana and thanked him for accepting the invitation to preach at the first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Service.

The event, set to be observed annually on July 1, is a new national initiative introduced by President Mahama. It aims to unite Ghanaians in gratitude and reflection through worship.

The maiden edition begins with a Christian-led prayer and thanksgiving service, followed by a second session led by the Muslim community. The dual-service format reflects the country’s religious diversity and commitment to interfaith harmony.

President Mahama described the Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving as a sacred moment on Ghana’s calendar. He said the day is meant to express national gratitude for divine protection and guidance.

Cardinal Turkson, a renowned Ghanaian prelate of the Catholic Church, is highly respected in global religious and humanitarian circles. He made history as Ghana’s first Cardinal and recently participated in the Catholic Church’s papal conclave, underscoring his influence in global ecclesiastical affairs.
