President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to expanding the Damongo Water Supply System to address the acute water challenges in the Savannah Region.
Speaking during a visit by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I at the Presidency, President Mahama described the current lack of access to potable water in Damongo and surrounding communities as unacceptable.
“The hardship faced by residents due to lack of potable water is unacceptable in the 21st century. We will ensure swift and sustainable delivery of clean water not only to Damongo but also to Larabanga, Canteen, and Busunu,” he said.
The Yagbonwura’s visit was to congratulate President Mahama on his re-election in the December 2024 elections. He was accompanied by a delegation of Paramount Chiefs from Gonjaland.
Mahama also emphasized broader development commitments for the region, including:
Health Infrastructure: Plans to establish a fully equipped Savannah Regional Hospital in Damongo to serve as a referral centre, supported by improved ambulance services, housing for health workers, and upgrades to West Gonja Hospital.
Roads and Connectivity: The President pledged upgrades to the Busunu-Daboya-Mankarigu Road and construction of feeder roads linking key farming communities. He cited ongoing works on the Yapei-Chama-Binjai-Salaga route and the construction of bridges over the White Volta, Yapei, and Buipe.
District Roads: Each district in the Savannah Region will receive 10 kilometres of roads annually, amounting to 40 kilometres over four years. Town roads in Bole and the Bole-Chache route are also on the radar.
“We are building where it’s needed most, to open up communities, boost agriculture, and ease transportation,” Mahama added.
The President emphasized that these initiatives are part of a broader regional development agenda anchored in equity and strategic planning.
