President John Dramani Mahama is pressing for swift accountability in the aftermath of the 2024 general election violence.  At the closing ceremony of the National Peace Council’s Post-Elections Evaluation Dialogue in Koforidua, he called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to expedite investigations and bring all perpetrators to justice.

“The IGP must expedite investigations into these acts of electoral violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Mahama stated firmly.

He also confirmed that the Attorney General’s office is finalizing a report to be submitted to Cabinet, recommending compensation for victims and families affected by the violence.

The event brought together political leaders, civil society groups, and peace-building stakeholders to assess the 2024 electoral process and explore ways to prevent future disturbances.

While the elections were mostly peaceful, isolated incidents in constituencies like Techiman South and Odododiodio led to casualties and injuries. These clashes, though fewer than in past elections, have fueled public demand for accountability.

Mahama praised the impact of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), which he said has helped curb politically affiliated violence through the disbandment of party vigilante groups.

Despite this progress, he stressed that electoral violence still threatens Ghana’s democracy. “electoral violence undermines public trust, discourages voter participation, and jeopardizes national cohesion,” he warned.

The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring victims are not forgotten.

“We will not condone impunity,” he concluded. “We will work to provide redress for victims and uphold peace and democratic integrity.”
