President John Dramani Mahama has called on residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region and Nkwanta in the Oti Region to give peace a chance as deadly violence threatens to derail ongoing mediation efforts.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 29, President Mahama expressed concern over the rising number of killings and displacement in both areas, including the recent murder of two students in Nalerigu.

“We can’t accept a situation where students are being shot and teachers are forced to flee,” he said. “Let us give peace a chance, not just in Bawku, but in Nkwanta and all conflict-affected areas.”

From Peacekeeping to Peace Enforcement

The President confirmed that the military has been directed to shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in response to growing insecurity. This means more aggressive measures will be taken to clamp down on individuals or groups fueling violence and undermining peace negotiations.

He noted that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is leading mediation efforts in Bawku, has made significant progress, but ongoing attacks appear to be deliberate attempts to derail the process.

Curfews, Arms Ban Enforced

The Interior Ministry has imposed curfews in both Bawku and Nalerigu townships from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective July 27, 2025.

A total ban has also been placed on the possession of arms and ammunition in these areas. Anyone found in breach of this order will be arrested and prosecuted.

The government emphasized the importance of restraint and urged local leaders to promote peace through dialogue and non-violence.

Evacuation of Students Underway

In response to escalating violence, the government is evacuating students from schools in high-risk zones. Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that curfews were partly implemented to ensure the safe evacuation of affected students.

“This is not just about security, it’s about saving lives and restoring normalcy,” he stated.

Ongoing Commitment to Peace

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah said the government is working to retool the Ghana Armed Forces to enhance internal peace and protect national security. He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the #ResetGhana agenda.

“Lasting peace shall surely return to Bawku and all affected areas,” Dr. Boamah said in a Facebook post. “Let’s collaborate to build a safer, stronger Ghana.”
