President John Dramani Mahama today swore in seven new Supreme Court Justices at the Jubilee House, marking a major expansion of Ghana’s highest court.
The appointments, made under Article 144 of the 1992 Constitution, aim to boost the Court’s capacity amid rising constitutional and electoral cases.
The new Justices are:
- Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
- Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
- Justice Senyo Dzamefe
- Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
- Justice Philip Bright Mensah
- Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
- Justice Hafisata Amaleboba
Most of the appointees are Court of Appeal judges bringing extensive legal experience. Their approval followed parliamentary vetting, with input from the Judicial Council and Council of State.
The expanded bench will help the Supreme Court speed up rulings, reduce case backlogs, and manage a surging caseload that often includes complex constitutional interpretations, electoral disputes, and appeals.
President Mahama emphasized the judiciary’s duty to uphold rule of law, urging the new justices to deliver justice with integrity and impartiality.
Legal analysts view this move as timely, especially with a major election cycle ahead, making a well-resourced judiciary more essential than ever.
