President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Ghana’s Black Queens on securing a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the team’s first podium finish since 2016.
The national women’s team claimed third place after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.
During a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House on Tuesday, Mahama praised the team’s determination and fighting spirit. “Your best days are still ahead. This experience will shape your journey and inspire even greater achievements. We remain fully behind you,” he assured.
Ghana had a challenging start to the tournament, losing to South Africa and drawing with Mali in the group stage. A strong 3-0 win over Tanzania secured their spot in the quarterfinals, where they defeated Algeria.
The team was eventually edged out by hosts Morocco in the semifinals but bounced back to defeat South Africa in the third-place playoff.
Parliament also honoured the Black Queens for their achievement on Tuesday, further acknowledging their contribution to Ghanaian sports.
