President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate review of shipping charges imposed by some freight companies operating in Ghana, describing any unratified fees as illegal.

He has tasked Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe and Attorney General Dominic Ayine to investigate the administrative fees levied by shipping lines and ensure that only charges approved by Parliament remain in force.
Speaking on Friday, July 11, the President emphasized the need to protect businesses from arbitrary costs that increase the burden on traders and stifle revenue collection at the ports.
“We’ve asked the Transport Minister to sit with the shipping lines and examine those charges closely,” Mahama said. “The law is clear, no fees or levies can be imposed within Ghana without parliamentary approval. We’ve consulted the Attorney General, and these practices are simply not lawful.”
His directive followed complaints from freight forwarders who raised concerns about escalating operational costs caused by unauthorized shipping fees.
Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to a fair, transparent business environment and pledged to hold all players accountable to national regulations.
