President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the Ghana Armed Forces to shift from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and surrounding conflict areas following a surge in violence, including the killing of students and displacement of residents.
Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, July 29, during a meeting with traditional leaders, President Mahama said the new military directive is intended to deal decisively with criminal elements threatening ongoing peace efforts.
“We can’t accept a situation where students are shot and killed, or where teachers and pupils flee because they fear for their lives,” he stated. “The military will now act more robustly against those causing chaos.”
The move comes as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, leads mediation efforts in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
President Mahama said the recent spike in violence appears to be the work of saboteurs trying to derail the peace process.
Total Ban on Weapons and New Curfew Measures
Following advice from the Regional Security Councils, the government has imposed strict curfews from 2:00 pm to 6:00 am in Bawku and Nalerigu.
A total ban has also been placed on carrying firearms, ammunition, or offensive weapons, with violators facing arrest and prosecution.
“Let’s give peace a chance, not only in Bawku but also in Nkwanta and other troubled regions,” Mahama urged.
Evacuation of Students Underway
In light of increasing attacks, the government has begun evacuating students from educational institutions in conflict-prone areas. This includes schools in Bawku and Nalerigu, where two students were recently shot and killed by unknown gunmen.
A statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed the evacuation plan and emphasized that curfews are partly intended to ensure the safe movement of students to secure locations.
Defence Minister Reinforces Security Measures
Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah echoed the President’s remarks, assuring the public that efforts are underway to retool the military and secure internal peace across the country.
“Lasting peace shall return to Bawku and all affected areas. We’re committed to resetting Ghana and building a stronger, safer nation,” Dr. Boamah said on Facebook.
