President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his wish for British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua to serve as an ambassador for boxing in Africa.

He made the remarks during a courtesy visit by Joshua to the Jubilee House while in Ghana for Legacy Rise’s “Battle of the Beasts” Boxing Night, held on Friday, June 13.

“I told him, Anthony Joshua, he will be our ambassador. It needs people like him to help change the lives of young people,” Mahama said.

“We wish him to take on boxing in Africa as a cause to inspire the next generation of fighters, boxers who will make Africa proud and uplift their communities. He is an icon and deeply loved in Ghana.”

The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Sports Minister Kofi Adams, boxing legend Azumah Nelson, and Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy Rise Sports. Former British welterweight champion Amir Khan, who co-produced the event, was also present.

Joshua, touched by the warm reception, said, “I can’t wait to tell the world how amazing Ghana is.”

The two-time world heavyweight champion is expected to return to the ring later this year against either Jared Anderson or Moses Itauma.
