President John Dramani Mahama is leading Ghana’s first-ever National Day of Prayer today, July 1, with a call for unity, faith, and hope. The new initiative seeks to rally Ghanaians together in reflection, especially during these trying social and economic times.

A diverse group of participants is expected. These include religious leaders, politicians, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens. The event will feature interfaith prayers that focus on peace, national unity, economic recovery, and moral renewal.

To accommodate all faiths, two main prayer sessions are planned:

  • The Christian service will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the State House Forecourt in Accra.
  • The Islamic session will follow at 12:00 noon at the National Mosque, also in Accra.

Two respected religious figures will headline the event.
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, a global voice for Catholic peacebuilding, and National Chief Imam Dr. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Ghana’s leading Islamic spiritual figure, will both offer prayers and reflections.

Organizers say they have completed preparations. They believe this day will inspire a renewed national spirit and promote shared responsibility.

The goal is for the National Day of Prayer to become an annual event. Going forward, it will serve as a platform for Ghanaians to unite across religious lines, reflect on the nation’s journey, and seek divine direction for progress.
