Mahama hails 5.3% GDP growth, promises stability for all

President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed Ghana’s 5.3% economic growth in the first quarter of 2025, describing it as a strong indication that the country’s economy is recovering.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President Mahama emphasized that his administration remains committed to stabilizing the economy and ensuring shared prosperity for all citizens.

The Q1 GDP data was released earlier this week by Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, who noted that the growth represents a rebound from the 4.9% recorded in the same period last year.

Reacting to the figures, President Mahama acknowledged the country’s past economic struggles. “In the past, fiscal indiscipline has disrupted macroeconomic stability, leading to a depreciating currency and reduced quality of life,” he stated. “Stability benefits everyone; it helps investors plan better and improves our purchasing power.”

He added that a steady macroeconomic environment would boost confidence in local and foreign investment, ultimately driving job creation and income growth.

“The first quarter results show around 5.4% growth. If this trend holds and we end the year with about 5%, it means the economy is expanding, not shrinking. We’re committed to sustaining this momentum,” Mahama said.

Education and PTA Involvement

President Mahama also addressed education sector concerns, particularly the diminished role of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in school management. “I was alarmed by how PTAs have been sidelined in recent years, especially at the secondary level. Communities must be involved in how schools are run. That’s the global standard,” he said.

Referencing findings from a recent Education Forum, he supported the push for decentralizing education oversight. “The review recommended decentralization, and I agree. It’s more effective for the Ghana Education Service to supervise schools at the district level than from Accra,” he explained.

President Mahama concluded by calling for the full reinstatement of PTA participation in school governance to improve the quality of education delivery across the country.
