Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has harshly criticized the Mahama administration over the controversial Dumsor levy.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 7, he accused the government of betraying public trust. According to him, the administration used deceitful tactics to gain power.
“This is a betrayal of trust,” he said. “We are dealing with a group of arrogant braggarts who scammed their way into government.”
The criticism follows the passing of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This law adds a GH¢1 charge per litre on petroleum products to raise funds for the energy sector.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson defended the bill in Parliament. He explained that the sector owed US$3.1 billion as of March 2025. He also stated that Ghana needs US$3.7 billion to clear the debt and an additional US$1.2 billion to buy fuel for thermal power generation this year.
However, the Minority Caucus strongly opposes the levy. They describe it as a “predatory tax” that could drain GH¢5.7 billion annually from families and businesses.
They also claim the bill was rushed through Parliament. According to them, there was no proper consultation or transparency. They are now demanding full disclosure on how the government will manage the funds.
