Mahama gives latest updates on Vice President’s health status

President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a reassuring update on the health status of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, stating that she is recuperating well and remains in high spirits following a period of medical attention and rest.

Addressing the official launch of the government’s nationwide sanitary pad distribution initiative on Thursday, April 24, 2025, President Mahama conveyed the Vice President’s warm greetings to the attendees, expressing her deep regret for missing the event, which holds significant importance to her.

“I wish to extend the greetings of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to all of you. I spoke to her yesterday, and I told her we were going to miss her at this event because this is a programme that is very dear to her,” the President said.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang reportedly fell ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was subsequently admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) for thorough medical evaluation. Her condition sparked widespread concern, given her pivotal role in the current administration.

In a statement released by the Office of the President on Sunday, March 30, it was confirmed that the Vice President had received the requisite treatment and was in stable condition. The statement further noted that doctors had recommended additional medical evaluation abroad as a precautionary measure to ensure her complete recovery.

Following this advice, Professor Opoku-Agyemang commenced a three-week medical leave on April 7, 2025, dedicated to her recuperation and overall well-being.

President Mahama reassured the public that the Vice President is expected to return to active duty in the coming weeks, playing a critical role in the implementation of key policies under the administration’s “reset agenda.”

“She said I should say hello to all of you and to say she is recuperating and catching a bit of rest. She is very well and soon she will join us to continue to prosecute the reset agenda,” he added.
