Renowned highlife and palm wine music icon Daniel Amponsah, popularly known as Agya Koo Nimo, has received national recognition following a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama.
In an emotional moment at his Kumasi residence, Agya Koo Nimo thanked the President and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts for fulfilling the pledge to honor him while he is still alive. The 88-year-old music legend, who has been inactive due to aging and health issues, described the visit as deeply moving.
“I thank the President. I haven’t walked in years, but I believe this visit will help me walk again,” he said in tears.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, June 25, followed a call by President Mahama during the Black Star Experience launch in May. He urged the Tourism Ministry to recognize Agya Koo Nimo for his immense contribution to Ghanaian music and cultural heritage.
Led by Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the delegation included Deputy Minister Yussif Issaka Jajah, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and other officials. They presented a hamper and an undisclosed cash gift to the music pioneer.

“This visit is a demonstration of President Mahama’s commitment to honoring our creative legends,” said Minister Gomashie. “Agya Koo Nimo’s legacy in the arts deserves to be celebrated.”
Industry stakeholders were also encouraged to remain united and promote Ghanaian creativity on the global stage.
