President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that nursing trainee allowances will be paid retroactively from January 2025.
He made the announcement during his Thank You Tour in the Bono East Region. Speaking at Kintampo Nursing Training College, he told students the government had secured funds for disbursement. “The Minister has made budgetary provisions,” Mahama said. “Payments will start from January and include arrears.”
He explained that the delay stemmed from setting up a new payment system through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, which will align payments with monthly public sector salaries.
The move follows a policy shift in the March 2025 budget presentation, where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) revised its earlier stance against paying trainee allowances.
President Mahama also thanked the GPRTU and transport unions for reducing transport fares, attributing it to improvements in the economy and a stronger cedi.
He outlined major infrastructure plans for the Bono East Region. These include value addition projects in agriculture and a 54-kilometer outer ring road in Techiman, currently undergoing engineering surveys.
On governance, Mahama warned Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) that their performance will be monitored.
“The Finance Minister will release first-quarter Common Fund allocations soon. Eighty percent will go directly to the regions. MMDCEs must deliver or risk losing their positions,” he stressed.
