President John Mahama has committed GHS1 billion to retool Ghana’s security services, addressing longstanding logistical and operational challenges.

The decision, he said, follows a recent Security Council meeting where he raised concerns about the deteriorating state of the Ghana Police Service and Fire Service.
“I have managed to squeeze the hand of the Finance Minister to his back, and we’ll get a budget of a billion cedis for the retooling of your various services,” Mahama told personnel on Friday, June 20.
He stressed the urgency of the situation, especially for the Fire Service, noting that outdated fire tenders are crippling their response capacity.
“Some of the equipment was bought over 10 years ago. There’s been no retooling. People insult them for late arrivals, but it’s not their fault they lack the equipment,” he said.
Mahama also highlighted the daily risks faced by police officers due to under-resourcing. “The police confront armed robbers every day. You can’t expect them to do that in light-skinned vehicles,” he added.
In a show of solidarity, senior officers from all 11 agencies under the Ministry of the Interior have donated GHS1 million to the Mahama Cares Fund, a medical trust supporting individuals with chronic diseases.
