The First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, has officially handed over a new, fully equipped maternity and children’s ward at the Asukawkaw Health Facility in Krachi East, Oti Region.
The modern facility includes a delivery room and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) fitted with incubators and phototherapy machines, designed to provide critical care for newborns.
It is also equipped with essential medical devices such as an ultrasound machine, patient monitors, autoclaves, vaccine refrigerators, adjustable hospital beds, baby cots, nurses’ offices, and examination rooms.
Addressing the gathering during the event, Mrs. Lordina Mahama highlighted the poor conditions of health facilities in the country and its repeal effects on people.
“Across our nation, we have heard heartbreaking stories of lives lost due to lack of hospital beds, poor maintenance, and systems that failed when they were needed most. We can’t allow that to happen here,” she explained.
The First Lady tasked the management of the hospital and community folks to adopt a good maintenance culture so the facility can serve for decades.
“I urge the health authority, management team, and this entire community to protect this facility, maintain it well, use it wisely, and let it serve this generation and many generations,” Mrs. Lordina Mahama added.
The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health; John Kwadwo Gyapong, Oti Regional Minister; Nelson Kofi Djabab, MP for Krachi East; and Safo Nketia, Municipal Chief Executive, alongside representatives from the Lordina Foundation.
During the event, the Health Minister praised the Krachi East MP for his key role in facilitating the project.
“I acknowledge the community’s initiative in engaging the Lordina Foundation, and I commend the Member of Parliament for Krachi East for his support in bringing this project to fruition,” he said.
