Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for the responsible and human-centred use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, stressing the need for strong safety standards, clear benchmarks, and appropriate policy frameworks to guide its adoption.

Speaking after participating in an international summit in London focused on the role of Generative AI in education, the Minister said discussions centred on safety considerations and the importance of establishing standards to guide the design, deployment, and governance of AI systems in learning environments.

As part of the summit, Mr. Iddrisu joined a panel discussion on the application of Generative AI in education, where he highlighted the need for AI tools to be intentionally designed to promote and protect human agency. He emphasized that the learner and the teacher remain the two most critical actors at the heart of education, noting that AI should serve as a support system rather than a replacement.

According to him, Generative AI must be used to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve learning outcomes, while preserving the central role of educators and students in the educational process.

The Education Minister further cautioned against over-reliance on technology, stressing that Generative AI should complement, not substitute, human agency. He underscored that human judgement and critical thinking remain irreplaceable cognitive abilities and must be safeguarded.

Mr. Iddrisu called for robust legislation and policy frameworks to ensure that the development and use of Generative AI in education align with ethical standards and long-term national and global educational goals.
