Light Gate Football Club were crowned champions of the 2026 Butog Grassroots Soccer Tournament after beating Young Strikers FC 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw at regulation time.

Light Gate managed to earn a hard-fought 1-0 win over Vision FC, courtesy of Philip Adjetey’s strike, while Young Strikers saw off Soccer Angels 2-0 to set up a thrilling final on Sunday afternoon.

Having proved their worth in the semis, Light Gate gave their opponents a run for their money, creating the best of chances in the first half but failing to make them count.

Back from recess, Light Gate were denied a chance when goalie Peter Eshun parried the ball out of play.

In the final stages of the second stanza, Samuel Martei scored, but referee Success Akwetey denied the goal and called for a handball on Martei.

The winner from the game was decided through a penalty shootout, where Light Gate scored all five from the spot to win their first title.

For their prize as champions, Light Gate received Gh1,700 cedis and other prizes, while runners-up Young Strikers went home with Gh1,000 and souvenirs from the sponsor.

At the end of the two-day competition, which kicked off on Saturday, February 28, Slyvanus Adjetey Adjei from Light Gate was adjudged the Best Player, and he was presented with souvenirs.

Speaking after the event, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Butog Events, Francis Budu, reiterated that he will continue to support grassroots soccer in Tema Newtown and its surrounding communities while calling on corporate bodies to support talent discovery.
