The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have jointly threatened to strike if the government delays further in releasing the exchange rate and processing payments for their book and research allowances.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, June 9, the three unions expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, stating it has created uncertainty and hindered academic progress. The groups emphasized that the allowance is a statutory entitlement critical to supporting research, teaching, and knowledge dissemination.

Following a joint meeting on June 8, they unanimously demanded that the government urgently release the applicable exchange rate and begin the payment process.

Despite the delay, the unions stressed that they will not accept any extension of payments beyond September 2025.

“If the government fails to commence payment by June 13, this communication should be regarded as a formal notice of strike by UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG across all campuses,” the statement warned.

They called on the government to act swiftly to prevent disruption to the academic calendar and prioritize the welfare of educators and the broader educational community.
