A lecturer at the University of Ghana Physical Education and Sports Studies department, Abel Manomey has advised both active and retired footballers to prioritize going back to school.
According to him, it is prudent to add academics to your career before, during, and after an active football journey, praising a few who have defied all odds to combine football with education and are excelling in their respective fields.
He emphasized that every footballer should have a second thought about that, noting that it is never too late to take up courses while retirement draws close.
“Before that, let me give thumbs up to a few footballers who have done so well while they blended football with education. Tetteh Zutah is now with the GFA, having worked with PFAG, and Philip of the Public Relations Department of the PFAG is also doing well”.
“To those footballers who don’t know what to do, I think you have to start having a second thought about your career. It is not too late; you can even apply and do Physical Education and Sports Studies at the University of Ghana while you think about retirement”.
“Because you have had every feeling of the game, and this is the best moment for you to add up in academia to the experiences you’ve had so that you can enter into the sports organization.” Abel explained in an interview with LinusNartey TV on YouTube.
According to him, he counts himself and a few others as the only seen footballers in the space when it comes to sports.
Abel Manomey had stints with Dreams FC and Accra Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League while pursuing a master’s degree program at the University of Education in Winneba.
In 2020, Abel was adjudged the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games’ top scorer with 10 goals in 10 matches.
He holds the all-time top scorer record in the university games GUSA with 39 goals from 35 games in six tournaments.
Currently he is unattached but actively trains and is ready to hit the ground running when he is signed.
