Ghanaian musician Kwaw Kese, born Emmanuel Kofi Botwe, has publicly criticized the Ghana Police Service after officers allegedly stopped and searched him for drugs near Spintex Road in Accra on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

In a video posted on Instagram, the visibly upset rapper described the encounter as humiliating and baseless. He claimed the police profiled him and searched his car for over 30 minutes, allegedly looking for weed or other illegal substances.

“Ghana Police, you stopped me at Spintex Road for about 30 minutes. You searched me by the roadside and searched inside my car looking for hard substances to fabricate a case against me,” he said.

Kwaw Kese questioned the motivation behind the search, implying that the officers expected to catch him with drugs due to his past. He recently buried his late mother, Yaa Serwaa, and stated that he had no reason to engage in illegal activity, especially in public.

“You were praising me while searching my clothes in full view of passersby. Why would I carry an illegal substance and allow you to disgrace me on the street? What kind of nonsense is that?” he added.

The rapper suggested that the police had no credible reason to stop him and accused them of attempting to set him up.

This is not Kwaw Kese’s first brush with drug-related accusations. In December 2014, police arrested him in Kumasi for allegedly smoking cannabis in public. He spent over a month in remand before being sentenced in April 2015. The court gave him a one-day prison term and fined him GH¢1,200.

Despite his past, Kwaw Kese insists he has turned over a new leaf and urged law enforcement to stop profiling public figures without evidence.
