Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has officially announced his candidacy for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries, pledging to restore unity, trust, and discipline within the party.
His declaration follows the official opening of nominations by the NPP earlier on Tuesday, July 29, as the party begins the search for a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
‘Clean Hands and a Compassionate Heart’
At a press event in Accra, Agyepong urged delegates to reject vote-buying and the growing monetisation of internal party contests, stressing the need for leadership rooted in character.
“What the NPP needs is a pair of clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart,” he said. “Politics must return to the grassroots, not remain in the grip of partisan elites.”
He emphasized that he represents a fresh opportunity for the party to heal from internal divisions and present a united front without “unending reconciliation.”
Call for Party Reconciliation and Reform
Agyepong extended an olive branch to former party stalwart and 2024 independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen, calling on him to return to the NPP.
“This party was built on sacrifice, not privilege,” he said.
The announcement drew support from various party faithful, including some former MPs like Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye.
Agyepong’s message focused on rebuilding trust, ending factionalism, and restoring the party’s moral foundation as it prepares for the next general elections.
