Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant – don’t dare rename Mahama’s projects – Former Energy Minister

Former Deputy Minister for Power and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy and Mines Committee, John Abdulai Jinapor has cautioned the Nana Akufo Addo-led government against renaming of the erstwhile Mahama-led government projects.

In an attempt to expose the NPP-led government’s tactics of renaming projects and passing them on as their conceived ideas natured and implemented to benefit Ghanaians, the lawmaker warned that the NDC will not sit and watch

John Jinapor said the NPP “having failed to achieve anything meaningful in the Energy sector” the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government is “rebranding the Ameri plant” as “Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant (K1TPP)” to deceive Ghanaians.

President Nana Akufo Addo is set to commission the relocated Ameri power plant on April 17 2024, with the name changed to Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant.

On February 15, 2015, the Government of Ghana under president John Mahama entered into an agreement with AMERI Energy to Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) the plant in five years as an emergency power contract. It was help stop the nationwide power rationing commonly known as ‘Dumsor’.

In the spirit of probity and accountability, the member of parliament for Yapei Kusawgu has reiterated that the “only thing the Akufo-Addo administration has done is to relocate the units to Kumasi”. He said the government now intends to commission the plant though it was commissioned by John Mahama before he left office.

“This attempt to appropriate achievements of President Mahama and present them as that of this non-performing government will no longer be countenanced,” the MP stated.

Having failed to achieve anything meaningful in the Energy sector, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government have done the unthinkable by rebranding the Ameri plant procured under the able leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama under a new name called Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant (K1TPP) , all in a desperate attempt to deceive Ghanaian.

The Ameri Power Plants made up of 10 units, each with a total capacity of 250 megawatts, is a modular and versatile plant allowing for flexibility to generate power even with limited Gas supply.

The only thing the Akufo-Addo administration has done is to relocate the units to Kumasi in Ashanti, and as if this is not enough, they have gone a step further by deciding to recommission the same plants 17th April 2024, interestingly this same plant was commissioned under President Mahama .

This attempt to appropriate achievements of President Mahama and present them as that of this non-performing government will no longer be countenanced.
