Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stands no realistic chance of returning to power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Kpebu dismissed the idea that the 1.5 million Ghanaians who voted against the NPP in 2024 would suddenly reverse course.

“There’s no way that number of voters would change their minds in just four years,” he said. “Unless the NDC performs terribly in office, the NPP has no shot in 2028.”

He added that 2032 might be the party’s next real opportunity to rebrand and compete.

Despite the grim outlook, Kwame Jantuah of the CPP believes Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will win the NPP’s upcoming flagbearer race.

“He’s the most marketed person in the NPP right now,” Jantuah said. “Others in the race are simply wasting their money, unless Bawumia is weighed down by Akufo-Addo’s legacy.”

Political science lecturer Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato supported this claim, citing several credible polls that point to Bawumia as the party’s top choice.

“Party members still see Bawumia as a viable leader,” he noted. “They’re not blaming him for the 2024 defeat.”

The comments come as the NPP holds its Extraordinary National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium. Themed “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” the event focuses on internal reforms and charting a new direction for the party.

Planning Committee Chair Joseph Osei Owusu revealed that delegates will vote on more than 50 motions and amendments, compiled into a booklet previewed by the National Executive Committee.

“We expect to conclude deliberations by 4 PM today,” he stated.
