Joseph Kofi Gakpo, an Assembly Member for Leblebi Fiafe, Agbesia Electoral Area in the Afadzato South District has called for stronger support for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), stressing that the success of government at the grassroots level is directly linked to the performance of these appointees.
According to the voiciforus Assembly Member and NDC Afadzato South Constituecy Youth Orgnizer Hopeful, many district assemblies are struggling due to the actions of self-serving local government officials who deliberately undermine MMDCEs and sabotage the local governance system.
He noted that some local government staff prioritise personal gain over public service, often offering poor advice to MMDCEs in a bid to ensure their failure.
Mr. Gakpo argued that to address the situation, the President Mahama-led NDC government must consider mass transfers of local government staff across regions to sanitise the system and create a fair working environment for MMDCEs. He said several Chief Executives are unable to function effectively under Chief Directors and other officials who are deeply entrenched in the local governance structure.
He further called for transfers to be extended across key sectors within Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to promote seamless governance and accountability.
According to him, a truly effective decentralised system cannot be achieved if local government staff continue to engage in sabotage, laziness, and corruption.
While welcomingthe government’s plan to channel significant funds to the assemblies, the Assembly Member cautioned that such investments would yield little impact if discipline and professionalism are not enforced within the local governance framework.
He urged the government to take decisive steps to reform the local government system to ensure MMDCEs are adequately supported to deliver on the national development agenda.
