Kennedy Agyapong reacts to $18 million defamation verdict

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has assured his supporters that he remains resolute after a US court ordered him to pay $18 million in damages for defamation to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Speaking at his campaign office in Shiashie on March 27, Agyapong thanked his supporters for their warm welcome and emphasized that challenges are part of standing up for the truth.

He urged his followers not to worry, stressing that this legal battle has only strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for the voiceless.

This ruling follows a defamation lawsuit filed by Anas in the United States, where a jury awarded him $18 million in damages.

This comes after a similar case in Ghana, where an Accra High Court dismissed Anas’ lawsuit. The dispute began in 2018 when Agyapong publicly attacked Anas, accusing him of corruption and extortion, after the journalist’s corruption exposés.

Anas had initially sought GH¢25 million in damages in Ghana, but the court dismissed the case. Agyapong has since filed for a remittitur, seeking a reduction in the US court’s awarded damages.
