Kennedy Agyapong, Assin Central MP and former NPP flagbearer hopeful, is facing intense criticism over a viral video in which he made what many perceive as religious jabs at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate.
In the widely circulated footage, Agyapong argued that Christians did not vote for Bawumia in the last election, suggesting that he, a Christian, should lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 elections.
“You’ve heard it. Ghanaians say if you bring Ken Agyapong, they’ll vote for you. Do you want to wait another 4 or 8 years?” he asked repeatedly, as supporters shouted “No” in response.
Speaking at a church, he claimed that the outcome of the 2024 elections was a result of ignoring the Christian community’s preferences. “I’m speaking proverbially,” he said. “The churches spoke, but we didn’t listen. That’s why we are where we are.”
His comments have drawn sharp rebukes from within the party and the public, who view his remarks as divisive and damaging to party unity.
Backlash on Social Media
Social media users, including NPP supporters, have condemned Agyapong’s comments. Many accused him of fueling internal divisions and stoking religious tensions.
“Your attitude is what I hate. You couldn’t even deliver to your constituency. Tell us if Bawumia is the reason we lost parliamentary seats,” wrote Lambon Augustina, a known party sympathizer.

Another user, Addo Frank, criticized Agyapong for diverting attention from the government’s controversial D-Levy rollout to party infighting.
Several others called him hypocritical, reminding him that he campaigned against his party in 2024, actions that the opposition allegedly used against the NPP.

Agyapong’s remarks have sparked renewed debate over the role of religion in Ghanaian politics, with many urging political actors to focus on unity rather than deepening divisions.
