Ken Ofori-Atta under NIB, EOCO investigation; extradition underway – Dept. AG hints

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta

It appears the woes of the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta are yet to begin as the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai hinted the former minister is under investigation by two separate investigative bodies apart from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

According to the Deputy AG, Mr. Ofori-Atta is being investigated by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) on matters separate from the OSP case.

Dr. Srem-Sai also indicated that the former finance minister’s extradition processes are underway for his return to Ghana.

Special Prosecutor’s Case with Ken Ofori-Atta

On Feb. 17, 2025, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, declared Ofori-Atta wanted and fugitive from justice.

According to Kissi Agyebeng, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta is suspected of involvement in several high-profile corruption cases, including:

Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract: Contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for revenue assurance in the downstream petroleum sector.

Termination of ECG-BXC Contract: Termination of a distribution loss reduction and associated network improvement project contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Technology (BXC).

National Cathedral Payments: Procurement of contractors and materials, and activities and payments related to the National Cathedral project.

Ambulance Procurement Contract: Activities and payments related to a contract awarded by the Ministry of Health for the purchase and maintenance of ambulances.

Tax Refund Account Utilisation: Payments out of and utilization of the Tax Refund Account of the GRA.

Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024, is believed to have left Ghana on January 2, 2025.

The OSP communicated with him on January 24, 2025, informing him that he was a suspect in four of the cases and requesting his presence for an interview on February 10, 2025.

However, Ofori-Atta’s lawyers claimed that he was out of the country indefinitely for medical treatment.
