‘Justice for Ghana’ showers praises on Mahama over e-levy abolishment

Pressure group, Justice for Ghana (J4G) has applauded President John Dramani Mahama and his government for abolishing the controversial E-Levy and other burdensome taxes, calling it a “landmark decision” that will ease financial strain on Ghanaians.

The advocacy group, known for its fierce opposition to the levy since its inception, described the move as a fulfillment of the President’s campaign promise and a victory for economic justice.

In a statement dated April 3, J4G Convener, Dramani Selorm Dzramado, commended Mahama’s “bold and decisive step,” emphasizing that the repeal reflects his “commitment to upholding the interests of the people.”

The group also recalled its relentless protests against the E-Levy, including a mass demonstration on December 2, 2021, and an eight-day picket at Parliament to demand its withdrawal.

“This decision is a testament to responsive leadership,” the statement read, praising Mahama for his “swift action” in signing the bills to eliminate the taxes.

J4G contrasted the current administration’s approach with that of former President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, accusing them of imposing “exploitative” policies while failing to deliver tangible relief.

To celebrate the milestone, J4G announced plans for a public procession to express gratitude to the President for his “empathy, honesty, and people-centered governance.” The event aims to rally Ghanaians in acknowledging the progress while reinforcing demands for fairer economic policies.

The statement also urged citizens to remain vigilant in advocating for reforms that promote “social justice and national development.” It reiterated J4G’s commitment to holding leaders accountable while supporting measures that alleviate hardship.
