Just In: Local Gov’t Workers Union withdraws from CLOGSAG strike

The Local Government Service Workers Union of Trade Union Congress, has announced their decision to withdraw from the strike action declared by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) over the appointment of the new Registrar of Births and Deaths.

With no clear timeline for their return, CLOGSAG has suspended it services.

The strike is in protest against the continued tenure of Samuel Adom Botchway who President John Mahama has appointed as the Registrar of Births and Deaths Registry.

The Union has kicked against the President’s appointment saying Mr. Botchway though has all the qualifications to occupy that office is politically exposed person as his was a District Chief Executive in the previous NDC administration.

CLOGSAG is basing its argument of a Supreme Court ruling.

However, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, February 19 at the Jubilee House, Minister for Government Communication, Mr Ofosu Kwakye explained, “The laws governing that entity clearly specify who should make the appointment. It states that it is the president, and the president has acted in line with the 1992 constitution.”

He further noted, “Section 236 of the constitution stipulates that, in appointing a person as the registrar, the president must consider the relevant academic qualifications, experience, and knowledge of that person in civil service administration. The registrar shall hold office on the terms and conditions specified in the letter of appointment.”
