It’d be foolish for Bawumia to say he disagrees with his gov’t on E-levy – Oppong Nkrumah

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has defended Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, regarding his promise to abolish the E-levy.

The former Information Minister revealed that Dr. Bawumia had opposed the implementation of the E-levy even at the cabinet level.

This statement comes in response to critics who argue that the Vice President can easily abolish the tax now if he truly meant what he said.

According to the Housing Minister “Vice President Dr. Bawumia, even before the E-levy was introduced, was clear on his position about taxing digital payments. I have been on record saying that when the matter came before the cabinet, he expressed his principal opposition to it. But in the end, cabinet took a particular position”.

He added that “It will be folly of him as a sitting Vice President to come and do a press conference and say that he disagrees with the stance of his government. He expressed his position, but we take collective responsibility for what was done around the table.”

Speaking on Channel One TV, Mr. Nkrumah, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Manifesto Committee, reassured Ghanaians of Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to abolishing all unnecessary taxes.

“He has therefore now said that if you make him the man in charge in 2025, that principal position that he has, he’s going to establish it by ensuring that this E-levy and other revenue lines that he considers unnecessary will be taken off. There’s no discrepancy between the two” Oppong Nkrumah emphasized.
